Councilmember Catania Resolution Denounces Discriminatory Amendment
COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA David A. Catania Councilmember, At-Large
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Councilmember David Catania was joined April 20, 2004, by every member of the D.C. Council in approving a measure that opposes an amendment to the Constitution of the United States defining marriage.
"I am pleased to be joined by all of my colleagues in opposition to this despicable assault on the Constitution and thousands of American families," Catania declared. "The Council has officially declared its sense that the Federal government has no business defining marriage and should not deny certain citizens equal protection under the law."
The "Sense of the Council on Opposing a Federal Marriage Amendment Resolution of 2004" finds that the District of Columbia's domestic partnership law could be imperiled by a broad, discriminatory Constitutional amendment. The resolution goes on to declare that the authority to define marriage should be left to individual states, including the District of Columbia, and that the Council is opposed to amending the Constitution to discriminate against lesbian and gay citizens by excluding them from equal marriage rights under all state and federal laws.
Catania continued, "There is simply no precedence for amending the Constitution to restrict individual freedom and the authority of states to define marriage. Our founding document should not be revised merely to incorporate the majority's position on issues of the day."
This measure was co-authored by the entire Council including Chairman Linda Cropp as well as Councilmember Jack Evans, Carol Schwartz, Kathy Patterson, Adrian Fenty, Harold Brazil, Phil Mendelson, Sharon Ambrose, Kevin Chavous, Sandy Allen, Vincent Orange and Jim Graham.
