Metropolitan Police Department in Washington DC Sponsor Safety Meeting

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Latino Advisory Council will sponsor a Public Safety Community Meeting on Saturday, December 2nd, 2006 at the Greater Deliverance Christian Center – Church of God in Christ, located at 441 Chaplin Street, SE (intersection with Texas Avenue, SE) in Washington, DC.  The event will be conducted in Spanish, with English interpretation provided.  The event will begin at 9 am and extend until noon.  A continental breakfast will be served from 9 am until 10 am. The purpose of the gathering is to promote greater communication between District Latino residents and the Metropolitan Police Department.  The assembly will be the fourth in a series of quarterly community assemblies with Latinos that are held in different areas of the city, and will be similar in format to the monthly meetings held in police service areas throughout the city.  The central theme of this quarterly meeting will be “Police and Government Services Available to Latinos.”

After breakfast, various speakers will address issues such as “the incidence of violent crimes against Latinos,” “DC Government services available to Latinos,” what happens when you are stopped by the police,” and “what happens when you are arrested.”  Latino residents will have an opportunity to ask questions and express any concerns they might have about police operations throughout the presentations. The Clínica del Pueblo will provide health screening services before and after the event, to interested to men, women and children attending the event.  They will provide free tests and information on cholesterol, glucose, HIV, blood pressure, diabetes, nutrition, and others.

Latino Radio personality Pedro Biaggi, of El Zol Radio, will be on hand to report on the event, and several other DC government and private agencies, such as Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Neighborhood Services, and others, will provide information on their services. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Latino Advisory Council consists of community, government, and police representatives. Current members include representatives of the Council of Latino Agencies, Councilmember Jim Graham’s Office, the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs, Neighborhood Services for Wards 1 and 4, the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency, the DC Department of Human Services’ Income Maintenance Administration, MPD’s Latino Liaison Unit, and MPD’s Third and Fourth District Commanders.
