Thompson Statement on Governor’s Action on Recognition of Same-Sex MarriagesNew York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. issued the following statement concerning New York State Governor David Paterson’s action to order all State agencies to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions:
“I applaud Governor Paterson for delivering a powerful message that New York State welcomes marriage equality. The Governor’s announcement, only weeks after the California Supreme Court’s decision acknowledging that marriage of same-sex couples is a fundamental right in this country, serves as a wake-up call. Same-sex couples in committed relationships should benefit from the same rights and legal protections as heterosexual couples. I am hopeful that our State legislators will welcome this move by opening the door to further change so that all New Yorkers can feel free to live and love as they wish.”
Last June, Comptroller Thompson issued a study finding that the legalization of marriage for same-sex partners could yield $142 million in economic benefits to New York City. The report – which you can read at www.comptroller.nyc.gov - concluded that the $142 million largely would be generated in the three years immediately following enactment of legislation, and would be derived from the spending of residents and visitors on their weddings, along with the spending of their out-of-town guests.
